"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
i have always, always been jealous of this event. I was baptized in a bathtub overlooking a church sanctuary with teal carpet. When i came up from the water i propably shot a snot rocket out of my nose and that was the end of it. Looking back, i wish i had the guts this kid had...
awesome right?
but anywho... Jesus comes out of the Jordan river, the same river his ancestors crossed on their journey to follow God, and when he comes out the Bible says heaven opened up and this voice, the voice of the creator of the universe says "this is my son, whom i love, with him i am well pleased." not fair. best baptism ever. Heres the beauty. God has told us we will hear those words, we can hear Him say this to us.
In matthew 25.34 Jesus says "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world." Now we will spend some more time on this verse later, but for now, we can see that we can have a similar promise to what Jesus got. We will be seen as blessed by God, and take our inheritance from HIM... AWESOME.
your baptism may not have had heaven open, but i can promise you the angels were celebrating in heaven. whether you were 4 months old or 84 years old. We get baptized to proclaim who we belong to, jesus belonged to his father, and his father was pleased with him.
i just think thats so cool. i want that. I want my heavenly father to be proud of me, and he promises me that he is.
awesome.
