i want to do more.
i think Jesus shows us how.
after jesus is baptized and thrown out of nazareth, he goes out and finds a posse, so it doesnt happen again. ok not really but i love westerns and the idea of a posse.
what he really does is get people around him that he will teach, lead, and ultimately leave his ministry to. 12 men to change the world. luke 5, mark1, matthew4, and john1 all have accounts of how this happened, so lets just go in order.
matthew 4.18-22.
This is a great passage. 4 young men. simon-peter, andrew, james and john. they probably knew of jesus and listened and respected him. he was after all a rabbi, and these young men, probably teenagers, looked up to the older, wiser Rabbi. So when Jesus calls them, of course they will follow. It was a huge honor to be asked by a well-respected rabbi to study with him, to follow him. The mere fact that they were fishing shows that at some juncture in life they were denied study and so picked up the family business.
but jesus said they were good enough.
other teachers said no, jesus said, "follow me."
so what were these young men to do? follow.
So why dont we do the same? I mentioned repentance and turning from our ways, yet for some reason we hesitate. throughout the gospels we see the failure of these men called by jesus.. but they had the wherewithal to know when it was time to listen and follow. even PETER! he was married, and still left it all to follow christ. (now we do know that peter was married but his house was also a base of operations, so to speak, so he did not leave his wife, in fact, some first century historians have talked about them being powerful in ministry together).
full comitment. thats the point.
i love luke 9... "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
